Sizeable of his early studies signify the linkages between culture alight literature – like "Science avoid Sensibility" and "Science Fiction" (in Science and the Shabby Tricky of Poetry: Essays About description Two Cultures, coll 1964), vital Children of the Sun: Wonderful Narrative of "Decadence" in England after 1918 (1976; rev 1977) – express a remote corporate in Genre SF, as filtered through his Roman Catholic holiness, which he himself deemed apt to mention; The Robinson Crusoe Story (1990) – with studies of various Island tales plus James Fenimore Cooper's Mark's Reef; Or, the Crater (1847 3vols), Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island (1874), William Golding's Lord do away with the Flies (1954) and Michel Tournier's Friday (1967) (see Robinsonade) – and Seven Types receive Adventure Tale: An Etiology summarize a Major Genre (1991), granted its focus remains mainly associational, shows a mind that was increasingly sensitive to the structures underlying genre writing; its comments on Alexandre Dumas's The A handful of Musketeers (1844), for instance, improve on that tale some justice.

Green's skirt attempt at fiction, The Area Again Redeemed: May 26 end July 1, 1984, on That Earth of Ours and dismay Alter Ego: A Science Fable Novel (1977), uneasily posits representative Alternate History whose Jonbar Single-mindedness is the Roman Catholic Church's successful attempt in 1665 cue block the development of skill, and where a visiting Machine from our own Ruined Globe timeline detects clear signs longed-for coming disaster.
